My Big, Wordy Bio

Everything you ever wanted to know about…

My career

I’m a writer and editor with a 15+ year career that spans book publishing, film, and more. I studied Creative Writing at the University of Michigan and spent my early career at United Talent Agency in Hollywood and then The Cheney Agency in New York, where I worked on projects by award-winning filmmakers and bestselling authors.

At UTA I developed a specialty doing “script notes” and analyzing books for film adaptation; at Cheney I became an in-house editor of both fiction manuscripts and non-fiction book proposals, for clients whose projects regularly sold to Big Five publishers. I also reviewed hundreds (thousands??) of query letters and submissions.

Since going solo I’ve freelanced for both UTA and Cheney Agency, as well as Lauren Kay Writes Editing Agency, NY Book Editors, several production companies, and individual authors by direct referral. I’ve also done copywriting and content development projects for clients in tech, lifestyle, and the nonprofit sector. My journalism has appeared in T: The New York Times Style Magazine, DuJour Magazine, BustleAllure, and others.

My Approach

I’ve spent much of my career in “gatekeeper” roles, so I know what film and publishing professionals look for in a project. And having worked across genres and formats in multiple industries, I know storytelling inside-out.

However corporate work isn’t what I find most rewarding, so I’m getting back to what I’m passionate about: helping talented, creative people express their unique vision in a way that communicates effectively with the audience they want to reach.

And as a writer myself, I know what it’s like to find your way back to creativity after periods of feeling stuck, frustrated, or insecure - or like you simply don’t know what you’re trying to say. That lived experience informs how I approach my clients: not just as a teacher but as a peer, who understands the tools writers need to create, and to thrive

I like to customize my services as much as possible, to meet authors wherever they are in the development of their project. That said, I work best with writers who’ve already put some work into their craft and are looking for expert insight into their current project(s), as well as to level-up the skillset - and the mindset - that they’ll bring to all their future creative endeavors.
